The maintenance coat - How to maintain your deck

If you’ve noticed water soaking into the surface of your deck, it’s probably time for a maintenance coat.

To freshen up your deck and stop further water and UV damage, you’ll need to add more oil or stain to your deck.

Start by scrubbing the entire deck with Cabot’s Deck Clean. This will prepare the timber for coating, opening its pours, while also scrubbing away debris from the timber. You probably won’t remove all the residual coating with Deck Clean, but assuming you’re applying the same product as before, this shouldn’t be an issue.

Once you’ve scrubbed and rinsed, allow your deck to fully dry out.

From here, apply 2 coats of your decking oil or stain of choice, following label instructions.

Uneven Wear

Some decks are partially covered. This can cause uneven wear from UV. To rectify a deck with uneven weathering:

  • Scrub the entire deck with Cabot’s Deck Clean
  • Allow to dry
  • Apply 2 coats to the weathered areas (be sure not to coat the areas that are still in good condition).
  • Allow to dry
  • Apply one coat to the entire deck.

This is the best way to match up your colour tones, and remove the uneven UV damage.
