Why is my deck orange?

Decking oils in the colour Natural have a light brown tint to them, which some people might see as orange on some very light timbers. This orange tone is a combination of the colour of the coating and the colour of the wood. For Treated Pine, we generally recommend a stain, in this case, Cabot’s Deck and Exterior Stain.

Aquadeck is a water based decking oil that is only lightly pigmented, which means that it only slightly changes the colour of the timber it is applied to. This makes it perfect for Merbau or other darker timbers as it allows the natural hue of the timber to shine through. If you’re unhappy with the look of an oil on your lightly pigmented timber deck, you can apply 1-2 coats of Aquadeck Merbau over what is already there, and that should tone down the orange-ness. Alternatively, you can apply Cabot's Deck & Exterior Stain WB, which will impart a stronger colour change.
