Cabot's Deck & Exterior Stain Water Based
Cabot’s Water Based Deck & Exterior Stain is a highly durable decking stain that lasts twice as long as traditional decking stains. It is ideal for changing the look and rejuvenating all exterior timber and decks. Its advanced dual technology allows natural oils to penetrate and nourish the timber, creating a durable acrylic barrier for extra protection for your deck coating. Additionally, it comes in a wide variety of deck stain colours.

- Scrub damp timber with Cabot’s New Timber Prep, following the label instructions.
- This draws out tannins and oils, so you can skip the 4–6 week weathering period.
- After using New Timber Prep, wash the surface with Cabot’s Deck Clean, following the label instructions.
- Use the squeegee on Cabot’s Deck Prep brush to remove any excess water from the surface.
- Allow the timber to dry for at least 1 hour before coating.
- Note: Cooler conditions may slow down drying time.
- Remove the finish back to bare timber using a paint stripper or by sanding.
- For exterior surfaces, clean with Cabot’s Deck Clean, following the label instructions.
- Wash with Cabot’s Deck Clean, following the label instructions.
- Sprinkle water on the timber:
- If water beads: Repeat Deck Clean application.
- If water absorbs: The surface is ready for coating.
- Sand timber back to bare wood, then clean again with Cabot’s Deck Clean before coating.
- For best results, sand timber back to a fresh substrate.
- Clean with Cabot’s Deck Clean, following the label instructions.
How to stain your deck
Apply with Brush, Decking Applicator.
- Stir thoroughly with a broad, flat paddle before and during use.
- Apply along the length of the board, including exposed edges and end grain.
- The initial milky color helps ensure even coverage and will dry to a semi-transparent finish.
- Allow the first coat to dry for 2 hours, then apply a second coat using the same method.
Cabot's How to Stain Exterior Timber
Every 12 months check your coated timber for changes in colour or water repellency diminishes due to weathering.

Clean the surfaces with Deck Clean as per label instructions.
Recoat with 1-2 coats of Deck & Exterior Stain Water Based.
