Cabot's Exterior Clear Water Based

Cabot's Exterior Clear Water Based is a fast-drying, easy-to-use durable water based varnish. It's designed to save you time, drying 3x faster than oil based exterior clears - letting you finish your project in 1 day! It protects timber against UV rays, mould and weathering. This high-strength, water-based clear coat varnish is ideal for exterior doors, windows and trim.

Hot tip!

Fill nail holes, cracks and other defects with a suitable exterior timber putty after applying the first coat of this product for accurate colour matching.

Prep New Timber
  • Scrub damp timber with Cabot’s New Timber Prep, following the label instructions.
  • This draws out tannins and oils, so you can skip the 4–6 week weathering period.

Clean
  • After using New Timber Prep, wash the surface with Cabot’s Deck Clean, following the label instructions.

Remove Excess Water
  • Use the squeegee on Cabot’s Deck Prep brush to remove any excess water from the surface.

Dry
  • Allow the timber to dry for at least 1 hour before coating.
  • Note: Cooler conditions may slow down drying time.

Sand and Clean
  • Lightly sand the surface.
  • Remove all sanding dust thoroughly.

Test Adhesion
  • Apply one coat to a small test area.
  • Let it dry for 4 hours.
  • Press a piece of sticky tape firmly on the surface and pull off quickly.

Check Results

If the coating does not come off with the tape:

  • Clean the surface with Cabot’s Deck Clean (follow label instructions).
  • Apply Cabot’s Exterior Clear Water Based as the finish.

Clean the Surface
  • Use Cabot’s Deck Clean.
  • Follow the label instructions carefully.

Test for Readiness

Sprinkle water on the timber.

  • If water beads on the surface, repeat cleaning.
  • If water absorbs into the timber, it’s ready for coating.

Sand timber back to bare before coating for a clearer look.

Sand the Timber
  • For best results, sand timber back to fresh substrate.

Clean the Surface
  • Use Cabot’s Deck Clean.
  • Follow the label instructions carefully.

Apply using Brush or Spray.

Stir the Product
  • Stir thoroughly with a broad, flat paddle before and during use.

Apply Coats
  • Brush in the direction of the grain.
  • Apply 3 liberal coats, allowing 4 hours drying time between each.

Sand Between Coats
  • Lightly sand the surface after each coat for a smooth finish.

For additional protection in areas exposed directly to sunlight, further coats may be applied.

Regular inspection of all coated surfaces is recommended. Pay particular attention to sharp edges.
